MAROOCHYDORE COMMUNITY JUSTICE GROUP

MAROOCHYDORE COMMUNITY JUSTICE GROUP

The Maroochydore Community Justice Group, as part of the Murri Court program, supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims and offenders through the criminal justice legal process and assist with linking victims and offenders to connect to culturally appropriate services and networks that help address the issues that bring them before the courts and prevent further offending.

The Department of Justice  provides funding to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to develop strategies within their communities for dealing with justice-related issues and to decrease Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples contact with the criminal justice system.

The Maroochydore Community Justice Group has been in operation since 2016.

The Community Justice Group consists of Elders and Respected Persons who bring with them their broad range of experience and strong connection with the Sunshine Coast Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander & South Sea Islander Communities. These volunteers form positive relationships with Magistrates, Courts, ATSILS, Police and correctional services, Youth Justice, health, education and other service providers to provide a wide range of important activities:

  • the making of appropriate cultural submissions to the Murri Court;
  • the identification and promotion of supporting programs that assist Magistrates in decision making;
  • supporting defendants to comply with specific Murri Court bail conditions;
  • working within the community to address offending through supporting positive networking; and
  • delivering programs to assist with rehabilitation and reducing recidivism.

The Maroochydore Murri Court convenes the fourth Thursday of the month at the Maroochydore Magistrates Court.

Empowering Our Mob (EOM) Program

The Empowering Our Mob (EOM) Program is a culturally grounded initiative led by the Maroochydore Community Justice Group. It is designed not only for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples but also for our South Sea Islander brothers and sisters who are seeking connection, healing, and cultural strength.

This program supports mob who may be navigating the justice system as well as those seeking early intervention, cultural knowledge, and meaningful connection to self, family, and community. It’s about walking together, learning together, and creating safe spaces for truth-telling, identity, and belonging.

Through the guidance of our Elders and Respected Persons, participants are supported to take ownership of their journey, reflect on their experiences, and move forward with strength and dignity.

For more information or to get involved, please contact the Empowering Our Mob Project Officer on 0493 127 130 or email admin.MCJG@fivebridges.org.au
